Solomon ‘Sol’ LeWitt makes a key contribution to the redefinition of artistic practice and the development of Conceptual Art in the second half of the 20th century. The focus shifts from the finished object to the idea behind a work; to the process and its development. In line with this conceptual understanding of art, LeWitt’s works are often planned in detail by him and subsequently executed by assistants. In contrast to post-war Abstract Expressionism, his work does not centre on emotional expression, but rather on a rational and mental impact. Among his most important works are wall drawings and paintings, in which he explores various ways of applying lines to walls, as well as sculptural works, many of which take the form of a cube.
