Sam Francis is born in California in 1923. He first takes up art as a hobby before pursuing his interest more seriously from 1947 onwards. Francis then studies painting and art history at the University of California.
Generally, his artistic work is attributed to Abstract Expressionism, and the influence of contemporaries like Jackson Pollock is clearly visible. Apart from these, other sources of inspiration include East Asian art forms and French Impressionism through extended stays in Paris and Japan. Initially, his art is mainly exhibited in European cities like Paris, London and Bern, but his reputation also grows in the USA from the 1960s onwards. In his early works, he primarily uses shades of grey; later, his artistic practice evolves towards vibrant paintings in which colour and light on a white surface play the leading roles. The colour blue is considered particularly defining in Francis’s oeuvre, whether in Action Paintings or within the context of other media such as lithographs, etchings and monotypes.
