Anna-Maria Bürgi grows up in Central Switzerland and eventually finds her way to fine arts through her training in interior design/decoration in Vevey and her later dislocation to Zurich. In the 1950s, she starts painting and, inspired by Oskar Dalvit and as one of a few female artists at that time, focuses on abstract art. Artworks come into being whose serial structures, visual rhythms, and blurring geometrical shapes already indicate the influence of music on Bürgi's art. Apart from this, the artist's inner feelings, and, especally from the 1970s onwards, an exploration of Zen meditation and eastern philosophy find their expression in Bürgi's work. The artist creates "Malbücher" (painting books), which encompass drawings, short texts, as well as watercolor paintings. Her visual language is shaped by vast and dynamic forms and colours, which may be understood as immediate corporeal expressions of her inner world.
