Maria Hafner is born in Zug in 1923 and initially studies German Language and Literature, Education and Speech Therapy in the 1940s. A health crisis eventually opens the door to art for her and she attends classes at the Kunsthochschule in Lucerne. Throughout her studies she also travels to London and the USA. Right from the start of her artistic career, nature and her immediate surroundings serve as a source of inspiration for Hafner. From the 1980s onwards, religious and philosophical themes gain relevance in her work. Her oeuvre encompasses works in a wide variety of media, ranging from oil and acrylic paint, through watercolour and chalk, to prints, tapestries, enamel paintings and stained glass. Her paintings feature abstracted figurative and floral motifs, which often have a biblical or personal-spiritual connection. The artist frequently works in series that are thematically, chromatically and formally interrelated, and she composes a poem to accompany each work. Maria Hafner thus creates works of a meditative nature that open up both spiritual-intellectual and emotional dimensions.
