Paul Jenkins is born in 1923 in Kansas City, Missouri. He studies under Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students League in New York City, where he also meets figures such as Mark Rothko (1903–1970) and Jackson Pollock (1912–1956). On the one hand, his works reflect the innovations of Abstract Expressionism in post-war America; on the other, his interest in the aesthetics and traditions of the East Asia region is also evident time and again. In contrast to Pollock’s Action Paintings, Jenkins often employs a more controlled, calmer application of paint, pouring the paint onto the canvas and guiding it across the surface. In addition, overlapping and semi-transparent areas of colour, particularly in watercolour, characterise his artistic oeuvre.
