André De Maertelaere, or ‘adema’, is born in Belgium in 1954 and later attends the Sint Lucas Academy in Ghent. From 1990 onwards, he teaches drawing and painting, initially in Ghent and then in 2006 in his own studio in Zug. Light is central to many of his works and is evident in the interplay of colours in the landscapes he depicts. His bold and colourful oil paintings are generally situated between Impressionism and Expressionism. Portraits and depictions of people also form part of adema’s oeuvre, which is exhibited in Switzerland, Belgium and the UK.
