Walter Friedrich Haettenschweiler is born in Zug in 1933. He attends the Zurich School of Applied Arts in the 1950s and works as a graphic designer with his own studio in Zug for many years. He gains international recognition through his time as co-editor of *Lettera*, a collection of title typefaces. His own typeface, ‘Schmalfette Grotesk’, also gains worldwide reccognition after being published in Lettera as early as 1954. Today, it is patented by Microsoft and available under the name ‘Haettenschweiler’. Alongside his graphic design work, however, Walter Haettenschweiler is active as an illustrator, painter and sculptor. In the Zug region, he realises many art-in-architecture projects, including wall designs for the Herti indoor swimming pool and a group of sculptures for the Reformed Church in Zug. Haettenschweiler maintains close ties with the Zug artist Hans Potthof, spends some time with him in Brittany and shares his artistic approach of creating landscape paintings in the studio based on simple sketches and from memory. Haettenschweiler’s preferred subjects are mostly everyday scenes, landscapes and portraits. He also produces a series of circus paintings, some of which he paints on newspaper. Alongside these figurative works, various experiments also yield neo-Dadaist sculptures, abstract landscapes and formal compositions using airbrush and stencils.
