Helena Krähenbühl is born in 1944 in the canton of Zug. Her travels take her to Copenhagen and London, where she attends the Royal College of Art. Since the 1980s, the artist exhibits her works locally as well as internationally. Krähenbühl has left her mark on the city of Zug not only through her art but also by founding the pre-school kindergarten and art studio “Kinderhütte”. In her artistic practice, Helena Krähenbühl draws inspiration from materials that tell stories and evoke memories. These are mostly paper, textiles or found objects made of other materials, which date from a specific period and are linked to personal experiences. Her works are based less on clear ideas and expectations and more on a continuous process of development spanning several years and employing various techniques. For example, she exposes textile compositions to the elements and making nature a co-creator of her work. Many of her works can be labelled as textile art; she creates wall-filling patchwork installations, knitted objects, or assemblages and collages from various materials. Krähenbühl repeatedly contrasts these traditionally feminine and often devalued crafting techniques with bold choices, like using copper wire as knitting yarn. Processes such as transformations, deliberate alterations and other time-related concepts are also frequently at the heart of her works, evoking a multitude of emotions and associations in the viewer.
