With “TIKA” (an abbreviation originally derived from the word “Antibiotika” (antibiotics)), Maja Hürst has developed a visual language. Since 2003 she created an artistic universe consisting of murals, exhibitions, and public art projects. Hürst’s works combine geometric and abstract forms with figurative elements, placing endangered species at their centre. Most of the works are created on site; this is also the case with the mural “Elefant / Tiger / Wasserschildkröte / Eule” (Elephant / Tiger / Tortoise / Owl) at the Stadthaus Zug, which is painted in one continuous session within 24 hours. The mural echoes the colour scheme of the interior design and features a deliberately rapid and raw brushstroke that contrasts with the sharpness of the individual forms. Hürst grows up in Cairo and Cologne and now lives in Berlin and Zurich. Exhibitions at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn and the Museumsquartier in Vienna mark important milestones in the artist’s career, as do acquisitions by various collections. At Siam Square in Bangkok, Maja Hürst paints the four columns of the Art and Culture Center. Hürst’s largest mural to date is created in 2012 at the Music Hall in Atlanta (GA) and measures 110 × 20 meters.
