Fritz Thalmann is born in Toggenburg in 1900 and grows up in a rural setting close to nature, which remains a constant source of inspiration throughout his later artistic career. His oeuvre primarily focuses on landscapes and depictions of nature and includes drawings, sketches, oil paintings and eventually also watercolours.
After several years of working as a primary school teacher in St. Gallen, Thalmann moves to Zug in 1929. Here he pursues his passion for painting while working as a merchant. Through Philipp Etter, the cantonal councillor of Zug at that time, Thalmann meets the renowned portraitist and landscape painter Meinrad Iten. Iten and other artists such as Reinhold Kündig and Hermann Huber inspire and encourage Thalmann. In 1941 Thalmann joins the artist group “Freie Zuger Künstler” with Eugen Hotz and Hans Potthof, among others. The group of artists not only organises joint art trips and exhibitions, but also provides mutual inspiration, ideas and intellectual exchange.
Thalmann’s works have a realistic, and at times impressionistic, character and excel through their colour combinations. From the 1960s onwards, the artist also devotes himself more thoroughly to the medium of stained glass.
