Kurt Plaas Winter (Gärtnerei, Löberen)
Current location
The artist is born in Zurich in 1945, where he also graduates from the Kunstgewerbeschule in 1971. His artistic work is strongly inspired by his immediate surroundings like the people he portrays and by the landscapes and places where he lives. From 1974 to 1979, Kurt Plaas lives in Zug and creates important local and artistic records among other works. This can be seen in his 1979 protest exhibition against the development of the Guggiwiese. Drawings and paintings in which Plaas contrasts the organic nature of the meadow with the geometric and austere floor plans of the building project illustrate the artist’s critical stance. This is shared by many residents of Zug at the time. In some of his large-format works in oil on canvas, Plaas also depicts scenes of the city of Zug. Some of these represent views from the window of his home. The focus lies on high-contrast motifs and image details, dense and airy surfaces, warm and cool colour tones. His works already possess an impressionistic character at this stage, which becomes even more experimental in later years: Plaas adds new layers of paint to some of his earlier works, partly in a pointillist style using acrylic paint, which lends the works a unique effect of blurring.
