The painter and draughtsman Albert Merz lives and works in Berlin since 1980. When he moves to Berlin’s urban sphere, he brings the mythical world of Central Switzerland with him. As a result, he developes a working method full of contrasts: his works reveal an exciting interplay of forms and colours, lines and surfaces, harmony and dissonance. The organic meets the inorganic, nature meets technology, calm meets chaos.
In his artistic practice, Merz often refers to the work of psychiatrist C. G. Jung (1875–1961) and his exploration of alchemy. On this basis, the artist creates mysterious, often paradoxical visual worlds that always revolve around fundamental questions of meaning.
