"Johann Michael Bossard is born in 1874 in Zug, where he later completes an apprenticeship as a stove fitter. From 1894, he studies sculpture under Wilhelm von Rümann at the Kunstakademie in Munich, followed by studies in painting in Berlin and trips to Italy. Alongside his artistic practice, he teaches sculpture at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg from 1907 to 1944. Bossard’s sculptural works often combine different materials and colours. He also produces colour lithographs, etchings, drawings and illustrations, as well as a Gesamtkunstwerk in the Lüneburger Heide.
Bossard’s career and political stance have recently attracted increasing public attention due to his proximity to National Socialism in the 1930s. Consequently, in 2021 the Kunststätte Johann und Jutta Bossard commission the Institut für Zeitgeschichte to investigate the artist and his wife’s relationship to National Socialism."
