Max Huber’s artistic work can be characterised by a high degree of meticulousness as well as creativity and dynamism. He works in the fields of graphic art, photography and painting . Hubert is born in Baar in 1919, he attends the School of Applied Arts in Zurich from 1935 under Alfred Willimann (1900–1957) and subsequently completes an apprenticeship in graphic design. In Zurich, he is influenced by the new trends of Constructivism and the Bauhaus movement. Later he becomes a member of the artists’ group ‘Allianz’ (alongside Max Bill, Sophie Teuber-Arp and Hans Erni, among others). His work as a graphic designer takes him to Milan, and for for many years the Italian metropolis becomes the centre of Huber’s life and work. It is here where he makes a name for himself internationally through exhibitions, competitions and commissions. In the 1960s he moves to Ticino where the m.a.x. Museum is now particularly dedicated to his graphic works. Alongside collages, photomontages, printmaking techniques and experiments in the darkroom, painting and drawing also form part of Max Huber’s artistic repertoire. In many of his works, his interest in jazz music is evident as a source of inspiration. Individual pictorial elements come together in a rhythm that appears like a visual translation of jazz sounds and geometric perfection is disrupted by syncopated dynamics. A shift in the pictorial centre is also often discernible in his works. Huber’s various works are further linked by their placement within abstract-concrete art.
