Ursula Bavier is born in Chur in 1918 and attends the School of Applied Arts in Zurich under Ernst Keller from 1939 to 1943. During this time, she developes her own visual language, characterised by graphic elements, simplification and stylisation. In the 1940s, she runs her own graphic design studio in Zurich, creating logos, leaflets, posters and stamps, as well as independent works such as ink drawings and illustrations. Around 1950, she finally moves to Zug and begins to draw and paint outdoors more frequently. She produces drawings in red chalk, graphite and other materials, depicting still lifes, people and landscapes. Bavier is often inspired by her travels. Her work undergoes a transformation with the use of oil pastels, a medium new to her, and painting becomes increasingly important in the mid-1950s. In general, her career shows a steady development from graphic art towards free artistic creation, although her craftsmanship and focus on form and stylisation remain evident throughout.
